Roger King & Failure Control Metallurgists and Materials Scientists

We have undertaken several investigations of failures and material problems in sailing and powered yachts. Roger King is an experienced sailor and is familiar with both the materials and marine aspects of yacht technical problems. He has undertaken work in an advisory capacity and as an expert witness.

Member of an investigation panel into the cause of dismasting of the 43m yacht “Whirlaway” during her maiden voyage. At the time of the failure the vessel carried the largest carbon composite mast that had been built. The investigation included consideration of both the mast design and manufacture and the functioning of the rigging.

Advised on keel damage and subsequent corrosion and cracking problems in a very large sailing yacht (93m overall length) following a grounding.

Provided expert evidence on propeller shaft corrosion in a 47m (3100 hp) displacement steel motor yacht, also hull and potable water tank corrosion in a 37m aluminium motor yacht (7300 hp).
